What your help means to us

Refused asylum seekers are not allowed to work, to register themselves as homeless or to be placed in local authority night shelters. Many become destitute, struggling daily for food, accommodation and clothing.

  • £5 will cover expenses for a weekend’s hospitality for an asylum seeker in need of somewhere to sleep
  • £17 will cover travel expenses to enable an asylum seeker to get to medical and legal appointments
  • £20 will give a vulnerable asylum seeker a week’s ASSIST grant to enable them to buy some food
“Of the people that ASSIST helps, if ASSIST did not provide them with limited financial assistance, then these people would have no other alternative but to be forced to steal food. This would mean more problems and work for the police.”

“ASSIST is a centre for raising awareness. Many people have come to volunteer - students, refugees themselves...people learn about destitution. It is important to have interaction with someone who's destitute, very important.”

“I've volunteered as a speaker to raise funds for ASSIST. Before that I had no experience of public speaking - I was nervous at first but now I'm confident.”

“It helped a lot with my case that ASSIST wrote a letter about my support...ASSIST provided a letter about my volunteering and contribution to the community. This really helped a lot with my decision.”

“ASSIST is part of my family now. I'm at peace. Without them I'd be moving from shelter to shelter every night, getting a bed when I could.”
